Masculinity and Facial Hair By Bernard Arocha, MD on October 10, 2017

Facial hair has a reputation as a sign of virility, strength and social status. Some cultures view bearded men as wise, and even require men to grow them, while other cultures see men with beards as uneducated. Facial hair can hide scars, define your jawline and put you at the forefront of the latest trend, but if you struggle to grow a beard or have sparse or patchy facial hair, it can be a problem.

Facial Hair Replacement

At Arocha Hair Restoration, one of the options we offer is facial hair transplantation. Whether you are looking to enhance the appearance of your beard, mustache, sideburns, or goatee area, Bernardino Arocha, M.D., can provide you with a solution to fill in areas where your facial hair grows in thinly or not at all.

Facial hair replacement surgery is similar to traditional hair transplant surgery, in that the donor hair is taken from the back or sides of your head. The key is to find the spot on your scalp where the hair most closely matches your facial hair and to utilize those follicles for the transplant.

Dr. Arocha will either perform the follicular unit transplant (FUT) method, or the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method, depending on your specific case - how much hair needs to be transplanted, the size of the recipient area, etc. The procedure is virtually painless - a topical or injectable anesthetic is used to make the process more comfortable for you - and can take anywhere from four to eight hours, depending on the technique used and the size of the transplant area.

During the facial hair transplant, Dr. Arocha will meticulously and artistically place the transplanted hairs to exactly match the direction of the growth of your existing facial hair, along with the angle of the hair at the recipient site. This is done to ensure that your transplanted facial hair looks absolutely natural and blends seamlessly into your beard.

Permanent Results

Post-procedure, you may experience some mild swelling, tenderness and redness at both the donor and recipient sites, but this will resolve within about five days. Dr. Arocha will give you specific care instructions after your transplant session, as well as what you can expect as far as healing time and new facial hair growth.

The transplanted hairs typically fall out about two weeks after your transplant procedure, but don’t panic - this is completely normal. They will regrow within about three months, and continue to grow normally for a lifetime. You will be able to style, grow, and shave your facial hair however you’d like once they have grown back in, and the results are permanent.

Whether you are looking for a fuller beard, or to fill in the areas of facial hair that are sparse or aren’t growing in as thickly as you’d like, Arocha Hair Restoration has the facial hair transplant procedure that can give you the masculine look you desire.
