A Message Regarding the Aftermath of Hurricane Harvey By Bernard Arocha, MD on August 31, 2017

We at Arocha Hair Restoration are simply in awe of what we’ve been witnessing during the past week. Our hearts go out to the hundreds of thousands of families throughout the Houston area who have been effected by Hurricane Harvey, especially the family and friends of Sergeant Steve Perez of the Houston Police Department, who perished in his efforts to get to flood victims.

Sergeant Perez will always be remembered as a Houston hero.

Beyond the awesome power of Mother Nature, what has been really amazing is the tremendous ability of the human spirit to rise up and meet any challenge. Volunteers from Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio have joined crews from Louisiana and other surrounding states, bringing flat bottomed boats, supplies and a level of enthusiasm that has been contagious. That is in addition to neighbors who have come together to help those in need, which is very much something that makes Houston a special place.

What we’ve been witnessing has been tragic and uplifting at the same time. We are simultaneously heartbroken and inspired. Thank you to the efforts of the many local, state and federal agencies who are aiding in the response.

You Can Help

The response from the business community has also been encouraging. The current tally shows companies have donated $26 million to relief efforts. That is a good start.

If you would like to help, Mayor Sylvester Turner has established the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund that will accept tax deductible flood relief donations for victims that have been affected by the recent floods. The fund will be housed at the Greater Houston Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity. Click this link to make a donation: https://ghcfdisaster.kimbia.com/hurricaneharveyrelieffund.

GlobalGiving has raised nearly $1 million from people around the world and has a goal of raising $2 million. Donate at https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/hurricane-harvey-relief-fund/.

United Way of Greater Houston maintains a disaster relief fund that enables donors to specifically earmark donations to aid a particular region. Donate at https://www.unitedwayhouston.org/flood/flood-donation/.

The Center for Disaster Philanthropy has also launched a Hurricane Harvey relief fund. The CDP Hurricane Harvey Recovery Fund will drive support for medium- and long-term recovery needs that will arise in the weeks and months to come. They expect the long-term needs to be rebuilding homes, businesses, infrastructure, meeting the needs of young children, supporting mental health needs and boosting damaged agricultural sectors. Donate at https://disasterphilanthropy.networkforgood.com/.

Finally, we are pleased to announce that Arocha Hair Restoration will reopen on Wednesday, August 30th. Please keep your safety and the safety of your loved ones as your top priority.
