Can Hair Loss Be Prevented? By Bernard Arocha, MD on March 21, 2017

Hair Loss PreventionWhile there is currently no cure for hair loss, there are some preventative measures you can take that may keep your hair from falling out at a significant rate. To reduce the risk of hair loss at an early age, our hair loss surgeon, Dr. Bernard Arocha, says these tips may help: Make sure your hair loss is genetic and not the symptom of a more serious health condition. Hormonal and nutritional deficiencies, such as thyroid problems, low iron, or low protein, can cause hair shedding. A physician or a dermatologist specializing in hair loss can help you accurately diagnose the cause of your thinning hair and ensure you are using the best strategies to preserve your hair locks. Use hair products that help—not hurt—your hair. Shampoos, conditioners, gels, sprays, dyes, and straighteners that are full of harsh chemicals that can weaken hair, making it brittle and more prone to breakage. Curling irons, flat irons, and hair dryers can also stress and damage the hair over time. Giving your hair periods of rest, or even simply wearing your natural hair color and texture, can improve the strength of your hair and work to prevent hair loss. Shampoos that contain ketoconazole (an anti-dandruff ingredient) have even been shown to actively reduce hair loss. Stick with FDA-approved drugs rather than supplements that have not been properly tested. Although there are many supplements that claim to support hair growth, most of these pills have not passed FDA standards. If you want to go the scientific route, choose a medication treatment such as Propecia® (Finasteride) or ROGAINE®. Both have undergone extensive research and have shown proven results for successful hair regrowth. It’s always best to speak with an experienced physician about your options to find out what may be useful for your specific needs. Eat a nutritious, well-rounded diet. While avoiding fried foods and sugar-laden foods cannot prevent the development of DHT (often responsible for hair loss), a nutrient-rich diet may aid in the prevention of hair loss. Vitamin A (found in carrots; red, orange, and yellow fruits; and eggs, fish oil, and liver) can promote the growth of new healthy cells, including the hair. Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 (found in eggs, fish, chicken, meat, and soybeans) as well as Folic Acid (found in leafy vegetables, avocados, broccoli, beets, and oranges) can increase the supply of blood and oxygen to the hair for healthier, stronger follicles. Since hair is primarily made of protein, a protein-rich diet can also promote hair growth—though high-fat diets have been linked to hair loss. Choose leaner sources of protein, such as chicken, fish, or tofu. Hair restoration can provide an effective, permanent hair loss solution for both men and women. Hair replacement surgery for pattern baldness has advanced greatly in recent years. With innovative techniques such as follicular unit extraction (FUE), Dr. Arocha can transfer individual hair follicles from the donor site to the balding area without any linear scarring. In addition, state-of-the-art technologies such as the advanced ARTAS® Robotic System guide the transplant of each follicle to optimize the angle and position for exceptionally natural-looking results. This method of hair restoration is considered permanent, and allows patients to cut and style their hair however they please with their own naturally growing hair.

While every individual is unique and may respond in different ways to specific preventative measures, these recommendations may be useful and can help you take a proactive approach toward preserving your hair for years to come.
