The professional staff of Dr. Arocha will schedule your hair replacement session in our own private surgical suite.

You will begin the hair restoration process by having a small area at the back of the head shaved and prepared to be surgically removed. Once this small piece of your scalp has been removed the area will be sutured together. In August of 2005 I decided to have hair replacement surgery on my thinning hairline I chose a nationally advertised hair replacement clinic. After several months I was partially dissatisfied with the results. I contracted for a 1000 grafts and felt like this would solve my problem. It made some improvement, but in my opinion I was worked on by a doctor who had minimal experience. I received too much hairline with grafts being placed in an unnatural position. It made some improvement, but it created other issues. I was told by one of the technicians that they had placed about 700 grafts in my scalp, but the physician had written down 1000. Male pattern baldness commonly refers to the receding hairline and loss of hair in the crown or lower portion of the head. Hair loss in men can be traced to genetics. If your grandfather's side of the family, your grandmother's side of the family, your father's side of the family or your mother's side of the family experienced male pattern baldness, chances are that you will also inherit this not so flattering trait.

Androgenetic Alopecia or simply male pattern baldness (MPB) is the most common type of hair loss that occurs in men. It is a condition that is inherited from either side of the family. What is inherited is a certain pattern of hair distribution, in which the hair is sensitive to the presence of a male hormone breakdown product (DHT). After puberty, the male hormone testosterone surges, hence DHT surges. Under the influence of DHT the hair is progressively miniaturized until it is just fine hair without pigment or vellus hair. This state where the pigmented thick hairs are converted to villus invisible hairs is the common bald state in men.

The incidence of baldness in men increases with age. The percent of men 25 to 30 years of age is 25%. The rate increases to 40% of the men aged 40 and 50% of men aged 50 years or older.

Your own natural hair:
Among the many hair restoration options available to men and women, none is more effective than one's own natural hair. Unlike synthetic hair that must be replaced as hair grows, the Arocha Hair Restoration process is permanent and is the most effective permanent solution to hair loss.

Topical over the counter and prescription medications:
Popular over the counter and prescription medications for hair restoration include highly marketed Rogaine® and Propecia®. The effectiveness of these medications varies from one person to the next. They can be effective in slowing or stabilizing the hair loss process and when used in conjunction with hair reduction surgery, can be effective in preventing hair loss.

Hair "Piece" or Toupee:
Synthetic and a natural hair "piece" have several major drawbacks to consider. Aside from looking artificial, they must be anchored to the scalp with snaps or glue. The scalp has a difficult time breathing and, as a result, can cause the scalp to become hot and irritated. The "piece" must be shampooed and styled professionally as surrounding hair grows. Certain sports activities must be curtailed to accomodate the limitations associated with a hair "piece" or toupee.

Hair Extensions:
Hair extensions are the application of human hair to existing individual strands of hair. Providing the patient has enough hair to accomodate the extension process, the effect is temporary and must be repeated as the hair to which the extension is attached grows out. Hair extensions must be dyed to match the patient's existing hair. The hair extension process can take up to 10 hours to complete.

Vitamins:
Currently there is no known vitamin that is effective at restoring hair. Vitamins can be effective in increasing blood flow to hair follicles and keeping the scalp and surrounding skin smooth and healthy.

Recovery After Hair Replacement Surgery

Your recovery after hair replacement surgery is usually fast. Most patients experience only minimal and transient discomfort. When present, discomfort is usually brought on when sleeping on the surgical wound. The mild discomfort is alleviated by Tylenol or Motrin. A stronger analgesic can be taken but usually it is not necessary, as the discomfort is rarely ever more than mild. The grafts heal quickly, forming a brown "scab" which represents surface epithelium. The scab is shed at about 7 days post-op. The healing and the growth of the hair transplant can be expedited by use of Graftcyte post-surgical kit.

Pattern hair loss in women is characterized by progressive thinning in the top of the scalp. The bald state is rare and should be worked up to exclude the possibility of excess male hormone. In about 15% of affected women the back of the head is also affected. The treatment of your male pattern baldness (MPB) is best accomplished by a two prong approach. First your baldness is surgically treated to restore the framing of your face. It is critical that a naturally occurring pattern be restored. The use of microsurgical techniques ensures that your results are completely natural and undetectable.

Secondly your hair loss should be stabilized by medical treatment. The most efficacious therapy of your MPB consists of propecia and rogaine 5%. Propecia is a blocker of 5a-reductase which prevents the conversion of testosterone to DHT. This is important because we do not know which pattern of hair loss you have inherited. That is, alopecia can continue to progress until the pattern you have in your genes is completely developed. Propecia slows or stops hair loss progression in about 90% of men. It can aid regrowth in the crown in about 48%. There was a slight increase in sexual side effects in those on the propecia (4.2%) vs. placebo (2.2%). Propecia is for men only. The second most effective drug is 5% minoxidil. It slows or stops hair loss in about 35% of patients. It helps regrow hair in the crown in about 10%. The 5% rogaine is 45% more effective than the 2%, but it is a little more likely to cause scalp irritation and oily hair.

With men, even in the most severe degree of hair loss, the Norwood stage 7, hair continues to grow in the fringe area, on the sides and back of the head.
